The Rimsky-Korsakov Saint Petersburg State Conservatoire is holding the Second International Week of Conservatoires Festival from 1 to 8 October 2002, which is devoted to the 140th anniversary of this first school of higher music education in Russia.

The musical forum, which is without precedent in the world, is meant to bring together on Conservatory’s stage representatives of high music schools from Russia, Europe and America.

The idea behind the International Conservatoire Week Festival is to demonstrate the achievements of various performers, from the talented and young to the famous, and to present the original outlooks of the music schools and their students.

The promoters of the International Week of Conservatoire Festival are:

The St. Petersburg State Conservatoire named after N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov;

The Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation;

The Committee for Culture of the St. Petersburg Administration;

The Artistic Director of the International Week of Conservatoires Festival is Vladislav Chernushenko, Rector of the Conservatoire and recipient of the highest and honorary national titles and prizes.

The festival organisers aim to:

  • Familiarise musicians, experts and music lovers with the fine traditions and contemporary achievements of various music schools;

  • Introduce the St. Petersburg audience to previously unheard music of a wide variety of genres, styles and epochs;

  • Present Russian and world premieres of chamber and symphony compositions, including one written especially for the festival;

  • Ease the exchange of experience in various areas of music between the Festival participants - both students and teachers;

  • Strengthen international links and mutual understanding between different music cultures via informal co-creation and joint performance.
